Began in 1994 on two basic premises 1. Students want to know why they are studying Maths and Physics. 2. Most students know very little about engineering ...Nor do their teachers This is the second ELP to be held in New South Wales.
We want students to BE engineers, not just WATCH engineers. Students work with a real engineers for the whole day, in groups, in a single discipline of their choice, designing and building a solution to a problem set by the engineer.
A real engineer talks about engineering - what it is really like, why they are an engineer – question and answer session (no more than 1 hour).
The engineer sets a problem from their field.Students discuss the problems in their groups.
Students learn any content or skills they need. They test their materials
At a set time they present their solutions to the engineer for approval.
Comments from the students who attended in 2012: • “Fun and educational. A little sad it’s over already!” • “Applying new knowledge and designing solutions was good rather than just learning content which is what we usually do.” • “Good experience, good people, good course.” • “I was given a real insight into the activities of engineers and life at university.” • “We did use a lot of maths and science but in a much more accessible way that helped me understand the relevance of it all.” • “I enjoyed everything.” I liked learning about different engineering strands and I love the problems we needed to do.”
