  8. Effects on War Gave the Confederacy a town, a extra trading route, and kept the balance in war.

  9. Battle About dawn, the Confederate cottonclads, Bayou City and Neptune, entered the west end of Galveston harbor, their first target, the Union’s Harriet Lane. After a brief encounter, it was certain Union victory. Confederate ground forces were outgunned and kept in check by Union warships. After a brief contest at sea, the Neptune was gone. The Bayou City captured Harriet Lane a few minutes later. Meanwhile, the Union flagship, Westfield, with commodore Renshaw on board, was grounded, so they called a temporary truce. During the truce, Renshaw and his troops decided to destroy Westfield, instead of it being captured. When they left they had go back and rearm the explosives. It went off to quickly and killed Renshaw. With the flagship blowing up everyone surrendered.
