16. Why So Negative? • This principle may sound overly negative, and certainly there are strains of Christianity that teach a stern, tight-lipped asceticism – as though holiness consisted simply in saying no to fun and pleasure. But genuine spiritual death doesn’t have a whiff of asceticism about it. It has nothing to do with monastic flight from the world. It is choosing to obey God’s commands across the whole of life even when it is painful or costly.
