2 Corinthians 5:16-21 16 So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. 21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Total Truth • Why do you think this book has this title?
How suffering happens • Page 356 • Saying “no” to sin • (obvious stuff: pride, envy, lust, wrath, greed) • Sneaky idols • Nice material possessions • Recognition and reputation • Being on top
Suffering in the N.T. • “We suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.” - Paul • “I have been crucified with Christ, It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.” - Paul • “Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you; but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exultation.” - Peter • “For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps.” - Peter
Discussion • If modern culture is at odds with a Christian worldview… why do you think suffering isn’t really a factor in modern Christian life?

Why So Negative? • This principle may sound overly negative, and certainly there are strains of Christianity that teach a stern, tight-lipped asceticism – as though holiness consisted simply in saying no to fun and pleasure. But genuine spiritual death doesn’t have a whiff of asceticism about it. It has nothing to do with monastic flight from the world. It is choosing to obey God’s commands across the whole of life even when it is painful or costly.
Luke 9:22-23 And he said, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.” 23 Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”
