  3. What was the Renaissance? • French for rebirth • Time period in Western Europe from roughly 1400-1650 • Time of growth in science, thought, exploration and art - Renaissance Song • Life for its own sake - not just preparation for the afterlife

  4. What was new about Renaissance art? • It represented a rebirth of classical Roman and Greek achievements - “dead” for 1000 years • Expression of profound emotions • Subjects that were both human and divine • Mathematical perspective • Oil paints allowed for advancing technique
