REPORT GROUP 3 NEW LEARNING AND TEACHING METHODS • especially geared to the use of multimedia (MM) in physics learning and teaching (ENG.) PhYSICS WORK INTEGRATED LEARNING - exploring strategies for forging relations between academia and the workplace
This presentation • Introduction • What we did so far: • Software enquiry • General questionnaire STEPS • Preparation for evaluation MM, WG3 • What next? • Discussion workshop Ghent • Follow-up • Conclusions
Introduction members EG3 • Mihály Benedict, Szeged, HU • Hans Joerg Jodl, Kauserslautern, DE • Ivan Ruddock, Glasgow, GB • Elena Sassi, Naples, IT • Robert Sporken, Namur, BE • Sonja Feiner-Valkier, Eindhoven, NL
Software enquiry among alumni • Alumni, working in industry, graduated from the universities from the members of EG3 • Questions: • Activity of the company? • Type of tasks new physics graduates are getting • What type of technical or scientific software is considered standard in this type of company? • The same for programming languages? • Which soft skills are important in your professional environment? Name three skills: most important-intermediate-least important. • 69 respondents: results
General questionnaire STEPS • Inventarisation of non-standard teaching methods for university level physics teaching: • Problem based learning • Student-centred learning • Blended learning (on-line/face tot face) • Laboratory based learning • Distance learning • E-learning • ………
Result general questionnaire • Long list of universities physics departments with contact-persons • Provisionally arranged in categories • Follow-up to be discussed in the working session Ghent
Preparation evaluation MM in WG3, I • Set of recommended MM from MPTL for evaluation during 2006/2007 by members of WG3 or their collegues • Topics: • Classical mechanics, • Optics, • Thermal and statistical physics • Atomic and quantum physics • Electricity, magnetism, Electrodynamics (EG3 made a contribution to the evaluation)
Preparation evaluation MM in WG3, II • Evaluation after 2006/2007 on criteria: • How it was used? • Which problem is addressed? • User-friendliness? • Documentation, goal-description, obvious use of MM, • Correctness, flexibility, effectiviness • Scale of application: individual or university? • Grading system; scientific way?
What next? • Workshop Ghent: • New teaching and learning methods: • Categories • Good practice examples • Software enquiry: follow-up • MM-evaluation • Participation of WG3 in MM-evaluation
Invitation for members WG 3 Alexa (Praha), Borghi (Pavia), Borg-Marks (Malta), Chisleag (Bucuresti), Clough (Surrey), Fleischner (Wien), Gatt (Malta), Gozzi (Trieste), Morando (Padova), Mathelitsch (Graz), Nancheva (Ruse), Obdrzalek (Praha), Patapis (Athena), Rogiers (Leuven), Roubik (Praha), Sinclair (St Andrews), Sperandeo (Palermo),
Conclusion • Preliminary results from the • Software enquiry alumni • General questionnaire steps • There is a lot more to be done! • We need your support for the rest of the project: • Especially WG3, and everybody else interested • LET US KNOW!
