  4. STRONG WOMAN?

  5. REAL MAN?

  6. The dangers of going the extreme on both sides

  7. REAL MEN. STRONG WOMEN. A biblical reflection of gender differentiation and roles A Family Life Ministry Talk

  8. 2 I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the traditions just as I passed them on to you. 3 But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. 4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. 5 But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved. 6 For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head. 7 A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. 8 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; 9 neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. 10 It is for this reason that a woman ought to have authority over her own[c] head, because of the angels. 11 Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. 12 For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God. 13 Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14 Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, 15 but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering. 16 If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice—nor do the churches of God. 1 Corinthians 11:2-16

For long hair is given to her as a covering.16 If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice—nor do the churches of God. 1 Corinthians 11:2-16

  10. 5 But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved. 1 Cor 11.5 4 Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says. 35 If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church. 1 Cor 14:4

  11. Women’s rights, Men’s rights and Paul’s views on rights. • The image of God and gender roles in the church.

  12. Women’s rights, Men’s rights and Paul’s views on rights.

  13. From food offered to idols to the rights of an Apostle to Gender Differentiation 23 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive. 24 No one should seek their own good, but the good of others. 1 Cor 10:23-24

  14. 4 The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife. 1 Cor 7:4

  15. I GIVE UP MY RIGHTS AS A HUSBAND FOR YOUR SAKE I GIVE UP MY RIGHTS AS A WIFE FOR YOUR SAKE

  16. 5 But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved. 1 Cor 14.5

  17. Context is about maintaining gender distinctions in culturally appropriate ways while ministering in a worship service 2 I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the traditions just as I passed them on to you. 3 But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. 4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. 5 But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved.6 For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head. 13 Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, 15 but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering.16 If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice—nor do the churches of God. 1 Corinthians 11:2-16

  18. The danger of reading the text without understanding how the original hearers understood it. Collectivism culture Individualism culture What you do has no bearing on your family. You are solely responsible. Roles of husbands, wives, children, parents are individual choices. Leans towards inclusive equality. Public dressing is irrelevant to the culture. • Honor shame tradition- what you do brings shame to the husband, father and family. • Roles of husbands, wives, children, parents are clearly defined. • Generally patriarchal and hierarchical. • Public dressing symbolizes the culture.

  19. Context is NOT just about the veil which most women at that time wore but also about the role of the male as protector and provider

  20. Paul is appropriating a cultural tradition of that time but modifying it’s symbolism to a Christian context. "Men sometimes cover their heads and sometimes not; but woman's hair is always covered, and children are always bareheaded." [Talmud, c. 200-500 A.D., Nedarim, p. 30b] "What is the Jewish law? Let not a woman go with head uncovered." [Talmud, c. 200-500 A.D., Chetubb, fol. 72.1] ". . . and when now thou raisest altars and payest vows on the shore, veil thy hair with covering of purple robe, that in the worship of the gods no hostile face may intrude amid the holy fires and mar the omens" [Virgil, Aeneis Bk. 3, p.403-409].

  21. BUT TODAY………..

  22. Today’s culture of inclusivity- would Paul have appropriated this into the church worship service?

  23. So what does the veil symbolize? 7 A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. 8 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; 9 neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. 10 It is for this reason that a woman ought to have authority over her ownhead, because of the angels.11 Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. 12 For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God. • Head of woman is man • Head of Christ is God 18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper(helpmeet) suitable for him.” Genesis 2:18 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:27

  24. FALL RE-IMAGED IMAGE

  25. Back to the Egalitarian vs Complementarian dispute… 8 Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing. 9 I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, 10 but with good deeds ,appropriate for women who profess to worship God. 11 A womanshould learn in quietness and full submission. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man;she must be quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. 15 But womenwill be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety. 1 Timothy 2:8-15. 7 A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. 8 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; 9 neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. 10 It is for this reason that a woman ought to have authority over her ownhead, because of the angels. 11 Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. 12 For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God. 1 Cor 11:7-12

  26. The wearing of fabric head coverings in worship was universally the practice of Christian women until the twentieth century. What happened? Did we suddenly find some biblical truth to which the saints for thousands of years were blind? Or were our biblical views of women gradually eroded by the modern feminist movement that has infiltrated the Church...? - R.C. Sproul

  27. Do you struggle with the fear of what other people will think of you for covering your head? Most of us who cover probably have. When I first began to drape a scarf over my hair in church, I was petrified. I was the only one. While my husband and I were wholly convinced that this is what Scripture mandates and were glad to follow it, my personality is that of someone who strongly dislikes sticking out or doing anything that causes people to notice. Would I lose old friends? Repel potential friends? Be gossipped about? What would others think? Would they think I was legalistic, doing this because I believed it made me better in God’s eyes? Would they think that I sat in judgment of women who didn’t cover as I did? Neither of these was true, and the thought of it all made me sick to my stomach. The one thing that has most sustained me through these questions is to rest my eyes on the Savior, and to do it for love of Him. Christiana Kuhlow, Head Covering Movement

  28. The most convincing thing about 1 Corinthians 11 for me was not only Paul talking about angels and the order of creation, but that it took up so much space in a book of the Bible that we read from all the time! How could I listen to 1 Corinthians 13 and ignore 1 Corinthians 11? Angela Dekker Angela Dekker describes to us the serenity and liberation she feels when wearing a head garment as well as the negativity she receives especially from other women. It is inspiring to watch as her dedication strengthens to remain veiled irrespective of the adversity she has faced. Sister Fransisca tells a tale of the sense of unity her veil brings to her and other Muslim women. Despite differing on religions, the covering of heads brings together different women from different cultures and societies as one liberating them from the subjugation of the lustful eyes of men allowing these women to be seen with an equal intellect, rather than an object of her beauty. Ahlulbayt Documentary, 2016

  29. What is Arnold teaching today??? Is he asking women to veil in FBC??? Confused….. Time for a disclaimer……

  30. We need to be reminded to empower women to use more of their gifts in FBC as a helpmeet. • Prayer warriors • Prophetic gifting • Church worship service announcers • Bible study teachers • Theologians • Missionaries • Deaconess • Women specific ministries • Ministries where women generally do better than men

  31. SERVANT LEADERS MEN ARE…………….. WOMEN SUBMIT. WHAT’S SO DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND?

  32. If a woman is a victim of domestic violence where is a safe place she can shelter? • If a woman is a victim of domestic violence who can she seek comfort from?

  33. “Many times in a Church world, submission is held over the heads of women by men who are emotionally manipulative or abusive in order to get their way and maintain power and control.” Paul Hegstrom

  34. Domestic Violence Domestic violence statistics in Malaysia Source: PDRM

  35. We need REAL men to lead the church in the following ways:- • Protect women from domestic violence- emotional, mental and physical. • Uphold single mothers and fathers. • Exalt singles. • Give back dignity to divorcees. • Have a lifestyle at home that demonstrates they are willing to die for their wives. • Serve in any way in the church where you see the need and not get intimidated if your wife knows the bible better, is more visible than you in church, etc. (this is how you are the image and glory of God)

  36. Real men LOVE Strong women (They don’t get intimidated easily)

  37. Real men LOVE Strong women When men and women are together, more of God’s glory shows than if we were all in little silos of individuality. John Piper
