What is the relationship between the shallow water turbidity observations and related observations from adjacent channel stations? • - Does one reflect the other in any way? With what consistency? Can one predict one with the other? • - What is the relationship between turbidity and TSS? • - Do the Data Flow cruises go out to the channel stations and if so, what does that tell us about the relationship of the shallow and channel monitoring? If Data Flow doesn't go to the channel stations, should it? • Does it ever cross from one side of a broad river, e.g., the Potomac, to the other and what can that tell us about the shallow/channel differences? • Can one shallow water monitoring station's continuous turbidity observations as well as other observations be related to adjacent sites, or are they entirely independent? • Are the shallow water monitoring stations effected by high TSS loads from the fall line? • - With what frequency does this happen? • - How far down estuary does the fall line influence go? To the oligohaline? To the lower estuary? • - What is the frequency of fall line effects for different stations in the Tidal Fresh Potomac for example? • Can we relate wind speed and direction to turbidity? • - If a stiff wind is blowing in a Chesapeake tributary do we consistently see high turbidity on the leeward shore? • - Does this effect all stations on the leeward shore? • - Do the windward shore shallow water monitoring sites have relatively less suspended sediment under the same conditions?
Review of Previous Work -- by MDDNR (Karrh; ) • 127 shallow, 54 midChannel (13 tribs) • Secchi depth, DIN, Chl-a. • Statistics: Wilcoxon paired-sample; relation plots. • ~2 km distance for midChannel to characterize nearshore conditions.
Mid Channel Stations: TSS (biweekly). • Shallow stations: Turb (15 minutes interval). • Precipitation, Wind speed, fall-line flow.
