5. Developmental Testbed Center Preliminary Core Test Results Bob Gall 18 April 2006
Core Test • Cases: Complete two retrospective runs per day, two months per season, all four seasons for both WRF-NMM and ARW (960 runs) • Domains: nearly (99%) identical (dissimilar map projections) • Verification: exclude 5-grid point “halo” region outside common domain • Resolution: 13km for both cores (RUC resolution) • Vertical resolution: 50 levels for both cores, similar distribution • Initial conditions: RUC-13 for both cores (imposes domain limit) • Soil initial conditions: Noah LSM “option 99” (RUC LSM in Phase 2) • Boundary conditions: 6-h NAM for both cores (as with RUC) • Phase 1 (Dec05-Mar06): Use NMM physics for both dynamic cores • More tractable task to port NMM physics to ARW core than v.v. • “NMM physics”: Ferrier microphysics, MYJ PBL, BMJ convective scheme • Phase 2(Mar06-Jun06): Use “RUC-like” WRF-RR physics for both dynamic cores (requires porting of NCAR/RUC physics to NMM)
