  4. Here we go – make notes AS Media G322 – TV Drama & Magazine Industry These are the exam units. The TV Drama element (Sep-Dec) will test your media textual analysis skills and your understanding of the concept of representation using a short moving image extract. The second unit is the Magazine Industry (Jan-April). You will be assessed on your understanding of the magazine industry and its production processes, distribution strategies, use of technologies and other related issues (audience reception etc).

  5. The exam Date: May (date TBC) Duration: 2 hours (including 30 mins for viewing and making notes on moving image extract) Content: There are two sections to the exam. A) Textual Analysis & Representation (50 marks) B) Institutions & Audiences (50 marks)

In short (ish) TV Drama will involve us looking at various moving image extracts (clips) and by using accurate media terminology, we will analyse how various camera angles, editing, settings, costumes etc contribute to the representation of sexuality, gender, age and so on. **Before the exam you will watch a short clip sent from OCR. You will then write an essay about how this clip portrays an area of representation. The second part of the course will involve us looking, in depth, at the magazine industry. You will be required to investigate and produce a case study on a particular magazine. These will be presented to the whole class to ensure everyone has a broad understanding of various magazines in the industry. You will then use this knowledge to answer a question in the exam.

AO2 Apply knowledge and understanding to show how meanings are created when analysing media products and evaluating their own practical work.

Match the topic with its definition An umbrella term that includes restrictions or limitations of one’s ability to move GENDER AGE The overall, collective distinctiveness of a certain area or place. ETHNICITY A person’s sexual preference or sexual feelings. SEXUALITY Can be used on many levels but ultimately relates to social ranking or hierarchy. REGIONAL IDENTITY Based upon cultural traditions and place. Not to be confused with race. CLASS AND STATUS The length of time a person or thing has lived or existed. PHYSICAL ABILITY/ DISABILITY Someone’s sex

  12. In groups, you are to conduct research into your allocated topic and prepare a presentation that you will deliver to the group.

  15. REMINDER AS Media Summer Task. I need your mini-essays on how age is presented in Hollyoaks by THURSDAY latest. (Names will be sent to Mrs Hall if this is not done)

  16. Homework • Complete terminology leaflet and email to me by FRIDAY • Write 2 PEA paragraphs on how Gender is presented in a clip of your choice (TRY TO USE TERMINOLOGY) • REMINDERS: summer task must be to me by THURSDAY

  17. Terminology!!!! I have given you each a glossary of key media terms. You will need to know ALL of these eventually. For now, we are looking at camera shots, angles, movement and composition. You need to create a booklet that clearly defines the terms in your glossary in this section.
