  1. Media as Evaluating Main Task

  2. Introduction • In this media presentation I will be evaluating the main task by answering a series of questions.

  3. Questions • What Kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? • The kind of media institutions that might distribute our product would be stores such as HMV, Argos or Blockbuster. The reason for this is that the film is made for the home entertainment market and thriller genre for which these stores cater. • We would also consider distributing the film via the internet. Although the internet would be largely used to advertise other products as it has a massive consumer range. Websites such as You Tube , ‘the largest world-wide video sharing’ and streaming website would be an excellent distributer as it is massively used by most internet users, and therefore our film would be widely distributed and obtain verification on the internet. • How did you attract/address your audience? • We attracted the audience by the use of sound, for example, non diagetic, sinister music, which conjured up an intense mood/atmosphere of intrigue. • The transitions helped to induce the audience through the scenes, for example, the view of the clock transitioning into the scene of the main character awakening from his sleep. • The use of props drew the audience in and created anticipation. It also constructed a mood and added suspense. • The location of the film depicted an everyday scene in the home, but with the added elements of music, props and fear it attracted the audience to expect something to happen. • Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product? • Looking back we have learnt that editing was harder for the main task than it was for the preliminary due to the fact that the main task had more scenes to cut, annotate and compile. The main task also required adding transitions and music (non-diagetic sound). • In relation to camera work we have learnt how to shoot more angles; closes ups and establish shots to give the main character context in regard to his emotions. • So far as the props are concerned we learnt that they are necessary to give the scenes meaning, for example, in the final scene you see the butcher’s knife being used as a prop.

  4. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of a real media product? • There are many ways in which our product challege the conventions of a traditional horror movie. Our openning two minute scene contains no dialouge. The lack of Dialouge was choosen by our group to inject more suspense into our trailer; we rely just on natural sound (e.g Door slaming, water running) and a scary audio sound that we repeat throughout the play at moments where we feel we need to engage the audience in the storyline. Lastly, our choice of location (edmonton) in a domestic modern house differ from a graveyard, ruined house or even forest which are usually the location in which horrors are set. • Who would be audience for your media product? • Our choice of setting and charecter selection imply what target audience we are aim our movie at. We picked edmonton in a standard house not only because it was convenient, but also because many youths that we know personally are use to the area. Our main charecter Daniel is a teenager himself, we choose him as our target audience (on average 16+) can relate to his situation firstly because they are youths themselves. • What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this this product ? I have learnt a lot of technologic methods from to producing my thriller film. When me and my group went to the ICC delta centre they had a lot of technical equipment that helped me and my group improve my thriller film and make it seem like a real opening of a movie and make it look professional. For example we used transitions so be able to swiftly move from one point to another and used music to make it seem more scary and more dramatic to make the audience feel something bad is going to happen. Overall I think the constructing of my thriller movie was good with all the technology I used and was given to us.
