What is OAP? • It is a 40 minute play that consist of no more than 15 actors and 5 technicians. • The play cannot exceed 40 minutes nor can set-up and strike exceed 7 minutes each. • It is a UIL sanctioned event that all LISD middle schools participate in. • Students are judged by a single judge and can receive 1st-3rd place as well as individual acting and technician awards, including Best Actor, Best Actress, and Outstanding Technician. • It is a pre-cursor to OAP in High School
Who Can Participate? • All grade levels • 15 total actors-Only 6 roles for actors this year! • 5 technicians • 4 alternates/understudies who will not perform unless they replace another actor but must attend all rehearsals
The Play • Crimes of the Heart by Beth Henley • Dramedy-The scene is Hazlehurst, Mississippi, where the three Magrath sisters have gathered to await news of the family patriarch, their grandfather, who is living out his last hours in the local hospital. Lenny, the oldest sister, is unmarried at thirty and facing diminishing marital prospects; Meg, the middle sister, who quickly outgrew Hazlehurst, is back after a failed singing career on the West coast; while Babe, the youngest, is out on bail after having shot her husband in the stomach. Their troubles, grave and yet, somehow, hilarious, are highlighted by their priggish cousin, Chick, and by the awkward young lawyer who tries to keep Babe out of jail while helpless not to falling love with her. In the end of the play is the story of how its young characters escape the past to seize the future- but the telling is so true and toughing and consistently hilarious that it will linger in the mind long after the curtain has descended.
