5 Act Play Structure Example: Romeo and Juliet
Act One • The history of the conflict and the current state of the conflict are established. Lines are drawn. • In Act I of Romeo and Juliet • The Capulets and Montagues hate one another and quarrel all the time • Romeo, son of Lord Montague, is sick in love • Juliet Capulet, daughter of Lord Capulet, is nearly engaged to Paris • Romeo and Juliet meet and instantly fall in love, BUT… • They realize that they are sworn enemies(doh!)
Act Two • Act II: Suspense builds as the "good guys" and the "bad guys” begin to make plans • In Act II of Romeo and Juliet: • Romeo and Juliet exchange vows of love • They marry
Act Three • The conflict progresses and it appears that the enemies have the advantage • In Act III of Romeo and Juliet: • Tybalt challenges Romeo to a duel, but kills Mercutio • Romeo slays Tybalt • Romeo is banished • Juliet’s father threatens to disown her if she will not marry Paris
Act Four • The events set themselves up for a possible happy ending, but tragedy is still possible • In Act IV of Romeo and Juliet • Friar Lawrence convinces Juliet to fake suicide • Juliet takes the poison and is buried in the Capulet tomb
Act Five • There is a plot twist and the play either ends in comedy(marriage) or tragedy(death) • In Act V of Romeo and Juliet: • Romeo never receives the Friar’s letter and plans suicide • Romeo kills Paris in the Capulet tomb • Romeo kills himself • Juliet finds Romeo and kills herself The End
Shakespearean Comedy • Some conflict disrupts the unity of the group-usually it potentially humorous like a mischievous character or case of mistaken identity • One or more characters are purely for comic relief • The play ends in a union of the group, usually a wedding or a plan to wed • The person or people behind the conflict are forgiven, punished or banished
Shakespearean Tragedy • Some conflict disrupts the unity of the group-usually a serious conflict like a fight or the influence of a “bad character” • One or more characters have a plan to destroy “the group” • The play ends with the death of the main character caused by their own planning and scheming • High body count-most of the main cast dies due to their own scheming or the actions of the main character
