Elements of analyzing fiction Plot, Setting, Characters, Theme, Point of View
Exposition • Setting and characters are established • Main conflict is introduced • Conflict: opposition of person or forces
Rising Action • The main conflict is dealt with through action • The main character is aware there is a conflict and takes steps to battle crisis
Climax • The high point/moment of greatest tension. May be physical, emotional or mental.
Falling Action • Story begins to wind down • Results/consequences of decisions character has made
Resolution • The end/dénouement. Conflicts resolved, loose ends tied up, happy or sad ending.
As we read story… • Trace story arc • Consider author’s decisions • Consider literary devices such as repetition
