Office of Immigration and Multiculturalism Established in April 2007 w/ Provincial Immigration Strategy Located in Viking Building 18 staff: one located in GFW, Corner Brook, and Happy Valley – Goose Bay Provincial Nominee – program staff Working w/ employers, post-secondary institutions, govt. agencies/departments, and newly arrived and established immigrants, among others

Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Nominee Program • Since April 2007, 1627 individuals nominated under the PNP (December 9th, 2011) • Nominees are from 82 different countries and have settled in 53 communities. • 51% in St. John’s • 49% outside St. John’s • 2010 Retention Study – 81%
NL Provincial Nominee ProgramRecruitment Missions • International Recruitment Missions • Ireland (Nov 2011); Belgium/France (Nov 2011); Jamaica (Aug 2011); Boston (Mar 2011) • International Recruitment Trade shows and Independent Missions (NL-only and Atlantic Canada partnerships) • Employer driven: skill set available, skilled immigrants available, language abilities, etc.
NL Provincial Nominee ProgramIreland Mission • Nov 6th-12th, 2011 – Cork and Dublin • Employers – 7 attended with job offers • Cork – 950 visitors • Dublin (Day 1) – 1,100 visitors • Dublin (Day 2) – 1,400 visitors • Creating a skilled worker data-base • Engineering/Trades • Health Care • Information Technology
NL Provincial Nominee ProgramCategories Skilled Worker(63%): guaranteed job offer from a local employer/ currently employed on a work permit with a local employer. Immigrant Entrepreneur(2%): Under development. Family Connections(15%): allows sponsorship of family members by permanent residents or Canadian citizens who reside in Newfoundland and Labrador. International Graduate(20%): allows international students who have graduated from a Canadian post-secondary educational institution, to be considered for nomination for permanent residence in Canada.
Provincial Nominee Program:Immigrant Entrepreneurs Under Development– Negotiations between province and Government of Canada ongoing Potential Categories: Self-Employed– Immigrants interested in purchasing existing businesses or founding new businesses Innovators (early stages)– Immigrants interested in developing new technology/research in NL Avoiding passive investment Legislation requires ‘Active Management’ and rules around share ownership.

Welcoming Communities Initiative Workshops have been held in four (4) towns: • Grand Falls-Windsor • Placentia • St. Anthony • Happy Valley-Goose Bay And three (3) regions: • Irish Loop • Northeast Avalon • Baccalieu Trail
