Industrialization By: Steven Holcomb and Dani Zakett
Before Industrialization • US was largely agricultural • Majority of population lived in farms outside cities • People were largely self sufficient- no need for large amount of trading • Several things in the late 1800’s led to industrialization, including: inventions, natural resources, immigration, and government support for business
Inventions • Telegraph (1832) • A device used to communicate across long distances by sending electronic devices to other receivers • Prior to telegraph all communication was done by horseback or ships which would take days or weeks to send important messages • Revolutionized communication and increased speed at which it messages were sent and received
Inventions • Another important communication was the telephone • Alexander Graham Bell (1877) • Allowed people to talk over far distances and improved the telegraph • Both allowed communication to be much quicker and allowed decisions to be made and implemented much faster
Inventions • Bessemer Process (1855) • A cheap and easy way to produce steel • Steel was stronger than other building materials and to build stronger and taller buildings • With steel it became easier to build buildings quicker and more effectively which allowed cities to expand
Inventions • Typewriter (1867) • Device used to record information on paper • Allowed businesses to become more organized and keep better records • Increased effectiveness of businesses
Inventions • Light bulb/Electricity (1879) • Thomas Edison • Changed the way houses and businesses operated • Business could continue into the night with better safety and more effectiveness • Ordinary people could have light in their homes all night with ease • Electricity powered the light bulbs along with other devices that were invented
Natural Resources • Helped to fuel the industrialization by powering the machines that were recently developed • many resources were previously available but did not have an effective use until inventions were developed • Important natural resources included: iron, oil, and coal
Natural Resources • Iron • A hard strong metal that could be extracted from the ground • Used as building material and key ingredient in steel • Through Bessemer process steel could be made more easily so iron was in higher demand
Natural Resources • Oil • Discovered in Pennsylvania in 1859 • It is a black liquid used to fuel machinery • As cars and other vehicles became more widespread more oil was extracted
Natural Resources • Coal • A resource used to power machines and engines • Especially key to the railroad industry • Provided cheap fuel to machines that were essential to industrialization
Immigration and Migration • Problems in Europe and Asia caused increased immigration to the US • Immigrants provided cheap labor for factories • People migrated from rural areas to large cities • Caused urbanization and provided more labor for factories
Government Support for Businesses • Us government followed laissez faire economics (not involved with business) • Followed doctrine of Social Darwinism (strongest businesses were successful)
