Playhouses in England • The beginning of the 1600’s was when playhouses began to appear in England • Open-air amphitheaters depended on natural light and the cover may or may not have been open due to the weather conditions • Indoor halls were lined with candles and torches • All playhouses were decorated in bright colours • It only cost one penny to get into a play in an open-air amphitheater, and these theatres were mostly used during the summer months • It was more expensive to attend an indoor hall as it cost six pennies, and actors were moved to the indoor halls during the winter months https://www.google.ca/search?q=playhouses+in+england&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.52434380,d.aWM,pv.xjs.s.en_US.RJfod4swqLE.O&biw=1280&bih=908&dpr=1&wrapid=tlif137969232093510&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=HG88UoTEG8WtqQHe8YHYCQ#facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=YZ8SG8Bt2kBoqM%3A%3BjtDV8dCVGm2Q2M%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.elizabethan-era.org.uk%252Fimages%252Fblackfrairs-playhouse.png%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.elizabethan-era.org.uk%252Felizabethan-playhouses.htm%3B336%3B280

People were suppose to have the same religion as their monarch. There were lots of Catholics in England at the beginning of Elizabeth's reign but when she died in 1603, Catholics were a small minority who were always in danger of their beliefs.Everyone was supposed to belong to the Church of England and you could be fined for not attending church services on Sunday. This is the church William Shakespeare attended as a boy. It is where he was baptized and where he is buried now. The Holy Trinity Church in Stratford has more visitors than any other church in England.
Religion The old Saints Days which used to be holidays in England weren’t celebrated anymore. But Christmas was still a large festival. Church services would be in English and not in Latin as in the old Catholic services. Shakespeare was probably inspired by the Holy Trinity Church. In his plays, he wrote about religion. He wrote scenes in churches and graveyards and also created characters that were nuns and friars. http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=old+england+nurses&FORM=HDRSC2#view=detail&id=D109F3067A2BBAD400951D30F4E0B411A19FE4C7&selectedIndex=0

Elizabethan Language • The Elizabethan language included many different words and sayings that we no longer use today • The alphabet had 24 letters compared to our alphabet now which has 26 letters • The letters “u” and “v” were considered the same letter as well as, “i” and “j” • The letter “y’’ made the “th” sound. For example “the” was written as “ye” • People who spoke the Elizabethan language spoke an average of 500 words a day, compared to us who speak 7500 a day • William Shakespeare used many of his own made up words in his plays, and is known for creating more than 2000 words in the English language, some of these words include: Amazement, Blushing, Courtship, Dawn, Epileptic, Frugal, Invulnerable, Jaded, Majestic, Negotiate, Obscene, Premeditated, Tranquil, and Varied. • Here are some examples of the language: Hence: away, Hither: here, Thou: you, Thy: your and Anon: right now. https://www.google.ca/search?q=elizabethan+handwriting&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.52434380,d.aWc&biw=1280&bih=908&dpr=1&sns=1&wrapid=tljp1379691496478015&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=12s8UrruLcvsqAGS5gE#facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=0NjTmgrkSjNClM%3A%3BVVmuA3rL9C10vM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Ffont.downloadatoz.com%252Fdownload%252Fimgs%252Fp%252Fe%252Fl%252FP22Elizabethan-upper.png%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Ffont.downloadatoz.com%252Ffont%252C11618%252Cp22elizabethan.html%3B650%3B300
