    1. Essential Question: How did religious beliefs and dissent influence the New England colonies? SCOC Goal: 1.01, 1.03, 1.05 Objectives: 1. Describe the geography and climate of the New England colonies. 2. Describe the Puritan settlers in Massachusetts. 3. Identify the new settlements that developed in New England as a result of Puritan religious practices. 4. Explain the changes the changes that took place on the New England colonies in the 1600’s.

    4. New England Colonies 10/16/8 Where is New England located? What colonies make up New England? Northeastern corner of the U.S. Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine.

    5. What is the geography like? Made up of hills and low mountains. Large areas covered by forests. Soil is thin and rocky, makes farming difficult. Rivers, and long coast line allowed for great fishing. Winters long and snowy, summers short and warm. Had less diseases and lived longer then Virginia colonists.

    7. What is a Puritan? Why did they leave? What were they like? Wanted to change, or reform the church. Charles I opposed and began to kill them. Had no toleration- recognition that other people have the right to different opinion.

    8. Why was Connecticut created? Why did New Hampshire occur? Did not follow Bay Colony. Created Fundamental Orders which established: a. elected legislatives b. governor c. 1662 received an official charter from king. 1638 created New Hampshire because disagreed with Mass bay colony. 1680 received charter from king.

    9. How did Puritans govern themselves? Set-up town meetings- an assembly of townspeople that decide local issues. Only males were involved. Set local taxes and elected people. Shipbuilding industry was huge.

    10. What was the King Philip’s War? 1675 major conflict erupted. Metacom chief of Wampanoag wanted to stop Puritans expansion. Metacom and allies destroy 12 towns. Metacom was captured and killed.
