Meet me at 5 or 10:30 Christ’s Presence in the Liturgy
VATICAN COUNCIL II: 1962-1965 • GOALS • To renew the Church • To reach out from the Church • To update that which is subject to change
7. TO ACCOMPLISH SO GREAT A WORK, CHRIST IS ALWAYS PRESENT IN HIS CHURCH, ESPECIALLY IN HER LITURGICAL CELEBRATIONS. HE IS PRESENT IN THE SACRIFICE OF THE MASS, NOT ONLY IN THE PERSON OF HIS MINISTER, "THE SAME NOW OFFERING, THROUGH THE MINISTRY OF PRIESTS, WHO FORMERLY OFFERED HIMSELF ON THE CROSS,” BUT ESPECIALLY UNDER THE EUCHARISTIC SPECIES. BY HIS POWER HE IS PRESENT IN THE SACRAMENTS, SO THAT WHEN A PERSON BAPTIZES IT IS REALLY CHRIST HIMSELF WHO BAPTIZES [21]. HE IS PRESENT IN HIS WORD, SINCE IT IS HE HIMSELF WHO SPEAKS WHEN THE HOLY SCRIPTURES ARE READ IN THE CHURCH. HE IS PRESENT, LASTLY, WHEN THE CHURCH PRAYS AND SINGS, FOR HE PROMISED: "WHERE TWO OR THREE ARE GATHERED TOGETHER IN MY NAME, THERE AM I IN THE MIDST OF THEM" (MATT. 18:20). S.C. #7
CHRIST IS ALWAYS PRESENT IN HIS CHURCH …Especially in her liturgical celebrations
CHRIST IS ALWAYS PRESENT IN HIS CHURCH In the person of the minister (bishop, priest, deacon)
Have you ever… • sensed Christ’s presence? • sensed someone in need of Christ’s presence? • been the presence of Christ for someone? • needed Christ’s presence?
CHRIST IS PRESENT IN THE SACRAMENTS When a person baptizes, it is Christ himself who baptizes
CHRIST IS PRESENT IN HIS WORD It is he himself who speaks when the Holy Scriptures are read in the Church
CHRIST IS PRESENT WHEN THE CHURCH PRAYS & SINGS Where two or three are gathered…
Have you ever been… • surprised at Mass? • glad to come to church? • recognized by someone whom you didn’t know?
