Waste Management By: Krystal Brostek
What’s the Issue • Waste from animal agriculture is an increasing environmental problem. • This waste Is one of the biggest problems with water pollution in areas that are surrounded by farmlands, because there are so many animals in a small area, which creates a lot of manure. • When the waste of all of these animals breakdown chemicals are released into the soil and into the air, and are carried down stream, polluting the water sources.
Effects on the Environment • When these livestock animals produce so much manure the amount of Ammonia builds up which cause fish and other organisms to die in nearby water areas. • The build up of nitrogen and phosphorus also increases, causing algal blooms which block the passage of water through water ways and depletes the oxygen in the water, causing death of life in the water. Fun Fact One cow produces 120 pounds of wet manure a day. This is equivalent to the amount of waste produced by 20-40 people. EWWW
How to fix the Problem • Ways these problems can be fixed are by farmers building riparian buffers, which are traps that hold and contain wastes so run off is prevented. • Easy ways to prevent run off is to clean up the animal waste before heavy rainfall is supposed to occur. • Avoid completely filling riparian buffers so overflow does not occur. • Switch to Vegan or Organic farming.
How the Government Helps • The government has placed a law called the Clean Water Act to help clean and improve the water quality in lakes, streams and estuaries in those farm land areas. • The National Pollutant Elimination System says that its illegal to dump any wastes without a permit, which prevents wastes in water sources. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJPYUMT94bQ&feature=player_detailpage
