Part I: Degree Program Progress: Things to Look for • Have you received a RED FOLDER? If not, Student Services has not approved it yet. Take a look at your e-mails to see if we have contacted you with questions. • Has the Graduate School approved your program? You will know if you received this…
No Degree Program? You are in BIG trouble! • If you haven’t completed a Degree Program form, and you wish to graduate in spring or summer 2008 you will need to so TODAY • Contact Steve or Ramona right away for details.
Part II: All About Petitions • Analogy: The petition is the sidecar to the degree program (the motorcycle) • It needs the degree program to stand up by itself. • The degree program needs it to carry extra cargo (your course changes, for example).
What’s a Petition? • A form that can amend your degree program (the most common use). • Generated by the Graduate School. • Like the Degree Program form, takes 3-6 weeks to process, and requires the same signatures (adviser, DGS) • YOUR responsibility.
Petition is used to: • Add or drop coursework from degree program • Change your degree track (only for MS students or MURP/MPP students who started before 2001) • Extend the 7-year time limit
How to Proceed Regarding Petitions: • You are asking permission to make changes from an institutional authority—not giving orders. ‘Please’ is a good word to use. • You should provide a reason for the changes—i.e. ‘class not offered.’ • Have your adviser sign it. Student Services staff will get the DGS signature for you.
Details Help • Course number • Course name • Semester you took course or intended to take it. (VERY important!) • Grade (if given).
Part III: All about the Application for Degree • How it is like getting a marriage license! • How you cannot graduate without it! • How it REALLY is used!
Application for Degree • If your degree program has been approved, you must order your GRADUATION PACKET • Go to 316 Johnston Hall • Order online at the Graduate School website at http://www.grad.umn.edu/current_students/forms/grad_packet/masters/confirm.html • This is the first form you should complete in your packet
Can you get married without the license? NO! Does it mean you are married? NO! Can anyone else do this for you? NO! Can you graduate without the Application for Degree? NO! Does it mean you have graduated? NO! Can anyone else do this for you? NO! Application for Degree vs. Applying to Marry
What is the Application for Degree telling the Graduate School? • Communicates to the Graduate School WHEN you expect to complete your degree.
Useful Application for Degree Facts • No adviser or DGS signatures needed! • Student Services rarely sees this form. We do not receive a copy. (So save your copies!) • It is the only form in the Graduation Packet for which YOU are solely responsible.
Balance/ Clearance Letter • The Application for Degree generates the Balance letter or the Clearance letter • Should appear in your U of MN e-mail box in the middle of your graduation month.
Clearance Letter Good news!
Balance Letter Normal news! (But keep tabs on your grades with One Stop!)
Balance Letter Cont’d. Also normal news! Student Services submits the Examination Report form to the Graduate School
Balance Letter Cont’d Not as good news! This means you will need to amend your program with a petition.
Part IV: Exam Forms • How your Exam Form is like a marriage certificate! • How you cannot graduate without it! • Who should sign it? (Hint: It depends upon your degree!)
Marriage Certificate Needs signature to mean anything Person specific—has your name and partner’s name Time sensitive (must be filed within six months of application). Exam Form Needs signature(s) to mean anything Student specific—has your name and ID # Time sensitive: Needs to be at the Graduate School (via SS) by the end of your graduation month Exam Forms vs. Marriage Certificates
Exam Form: Plan B • Requires signatures of each oral exam committee member • Exam committee has to be approved by Graduate School • Student can pass or fail oral exam.
What is the Exam Form (CWO) telling the Graduate School? • There is no formal oral examination • Humphrey degree requirements have been met: • Paper completed (if applicable) • Internship (if applicable) • Fees paid
Exam Forms: Fun Facts • Like Application for Degree, Exam Form is found in the Graduation Packet • MUST be brought to GPO (regardless of degree) five days before end of graduation month (May 23rd, for example)
Exam Forms: Fun Facts Cont’d. • Required for you to graduate (all degrees) • Capstone Groups: Each member must turn in Exam Form.
Who is on Your Exam Committee? (CWO)Answer: the DGS (director of graduate studies)
Why are Paper Title pages so darn important? They tell the DGS that you have ‘passed’ your oral presentation (MPP) or that your reviewers have approved your professional paper (MURP) Part V: Paper Title Pages to the Rescue! (CWO)
Paper Title Page MPP • You MUST have an oral presentation. • Committee of two people • Faculty (HHHI) and client OR • Two graduate-level faculty (one must be HHHI)
Paper Title Page MURP (CWO) • No oral presentation • Must be signed by ALL three reviewers • Paper adviser • HHHI faculty member • Client or Practitioner • Reviewers cannot sign unless paper meets expectations.
About Papers and Paper Binding • Binding paper is a requirement for MPP, MURP and MS degrees • Copy of paper for binding (MPP, MURP and MS) • Title page signed by applicable parties (not OK to turn in separately from paper) • Payment for each copy bound $14/copy—one copy minimum
About Papers and Binding Cont’d.: GROUPS • Capstone groups with any MPP members must have paper bound. MPP students will not graduate until this step is complete. • Names of all group members should be on title page. Student Services will place one copy in the file of each student. • How the group decides $14 binding fee allocation is a group decision.
Finishing up! What Student Services Wants from You • Exam Form (all degrees) • Payment for outstanding printing fees • Evidence of internship (MURP, MPP) • Student evaluation • Internship supervisor evaluation • OR Internship Waiver • Exit Information form(Internal to HHHI)
Hooray! You are a Graduate! • Diploma arrives 2-5 months after official graduation date • Sent to the address you put on the Application for Degree • Come to Humphrey Commencement Ceremony! May 18
