Phonics Method: What In initial stage, language learning needs to be based on the following three skills • Listening • Speaking • Recognition • Reading Therefore, instead of the names of letters of alphabet (graphemes), letter sounds (phonemes) should be emphasized
A definition • The phonic method of instruction is language instruction that is based on letter sound and letter name relationship leading to proficient reading with correct and clear articulation
Phonically Sound Reading • It is defined as • decoding of graphemes or written symbols of letters • into • phonemes or standard sounds • with • understanding of the rules governing decoding with speech clarity.
Specific situational uses: Analytic and Synthetic Phonics • For children with learning difficulties or speech defects and those learning a new language, the analytic or inductive phonics method is used which involves phonic spelling of words with rules and their practice through similar or rhyming words. • For children already good in spoken language or auditory discrimination, the synthesis or deductive phonics method is used that involves reasoning from the rule to specific application.
