Limitations for Correlation & Regression • The distinction between explanatory and response variables is important in regression. • Not important in correlation • Correlation and regression lines describe only linear relationships. • Always plot your data & check the residual plot • Correlation and LSRL are not resistant • They are affected by outliers (unusual points)

  10. Unusual Points • Outliers • Observation that lies outside the overall pattern of the other observations. • They are usually in the y-direction • Influential Point • It is influential if removing it would markedly change the result of the calculation. • They are usually in the x-direction
