Brief History • Studies suggest that weaving has been present in our history since humans have had the use of basic technologies • The first weavings were done by weaving narrow bands with one’s fingers (similar to knotting and braiding techniques used today in friendship bracelets) • All Members of the family helped to weave things such as rugs, blankets, tapestries for the walls, and cloth for clothes • In the 18th/19th centuries weaving in the western world was industrialized. Cottage weaving (weaving done by individual families for the family) ceased to exist.

Weaving Vocabulary • Weaving — The process of forming cloth or fabric on a loom by interlacing yarn or thread (or, as in this case, paper). • Loom — A frame for weaving yarn or thread into cloth or fabric. Warp — Threads running lengthwise on the loom. The warp is placed on the loom prior to beginning the weaving process.

Hands-On ExperiencePaper Weaving • Choose a kit • Take out the full sized paper that has slits in it—this will be your Loom and Warp threads • Weave your weft threads (Pre-cut strips of paper) over and under the warp paper threads attaching the weft threads to your loom with glue when finished. • Create an original design! • Do not weave over and under every warp- create your own pattern that is not the standard checker board by skipping a warp thread every other motion. AND/OR • Glue a different colour strip of paper onto the middle of your weft before weaving.

  7. Clean-up • Put your loom and any unused weft threads into your kit bag to take home and finish on your own time • Add Handout to kit

Apply Weaving to Your Life • Weavings done today can later be laminated and turned into placemats • Or framed for wall art • Can be used to create original looking cards • Use cording instead of paper and fix broken lawn chairs (seat frame becomes the loom) • Process can be adapted for making paper baskets and boxes
