  2. The New Agenda Increased use of Information and Communication technology Marrying technology to natural history Convergence of many technologies for conservation use

  3. The national tech scene for Tiger Reserves • NTCA PHASE IV MONITORING ANNUAL MINIMUM TIGER NUMBERS BASED ON CAMERA TRAPS FOR EVERY TIGER RESERVE • National Repository of Camera Trap Photographs of Tigers (NRCTPT) • e-EYE, CORBETT TIGER RESERVE • MSTRIPES – WII AND NTCA • KARNATAKA TIGER IMAGE DATABASE (KTID)

  4. Phase IV – Monitoring of NTCA also speaks of Daily Patrol Log Polygon based Patrolling

  5. Technology for Field level implementation • Why it is required? THINK LIKE A GUARD • How it should be done? THINK LIKE A FOREST WATCHER • What it should give us? • THINK LIKE APP DESIGNER • Uncluttered data with broad framework for operation

  6. HULI • Input directly from field units to web server • Input supported by a GPS polygon • Cell phone signal boosted to transmit packets of data from remote APCs • Data input is line with NTCA protocols • Generates reports on patrols on monthly and periodic basis of a Tiger Reserve

  7. 655 Foot Patrols covering 4464 Kms Prey animals sighted – 1777 Nos Prey Biomass total: 276202 Kgs The Story so far… (last 6 months in Punjur Range) Prey biomass indicates it can support more Tigers than estimated at present

  8. To be upscaled to all the Tiger Reserves of Karnataka The Story so far… ANDROID VERSION DEVELOPED

  9. The Problem

  10. THE ROAD AHEAD • Man-Animal Conflict • Issues to bring tech for effective barriers • Bring private players to insure crops and lives • Thermal image systems for early warning in case of elephants • Continuous green energy to remote field units • Hybrid systems of Solar and Micro-Hydro • Solar and Wind • Increase connectivity to remote field units • Increase partnership.Eg: www.brt.gov.in

  11. …. there is a need for the Forest Department to think of technology to better the lives of the frontline staff and at the same time bring out a sustainable transparent working system on the ground
