PSAPublic Service Announcement April 2011
A Public Service Announcement is a 30 second “commercial” for a non-profit organization. To the audience however, the PSA is just another commercial. You must get the audience to listen and act to support your organization!
Begin with your goal (message) in mind. This is the one thing you want the audience to hear, to understand, to remember, and to act upon.
Focus on the results of audience action.Be sure the audience knows the impact of their acting to help or support your organization.
Use language everyone in the audience can easily understand.“Big” words and slang will not communicate your message well.
Use emotion.People act more often when you appeal to their emotions instead of bombarding them with facts. Include only 1 or 2 important facts.
Make it personal.Put your audience into a situation.Show how their support will keep others out of that situation.
Identify the organization.Blend in the name of your organization with your message. The audience can’t help if you don’t give them contact information.
Be sure your message is clear. The audience needs to be able to understand your message easily. Add nothing that will distract your audience from the message.
Use music carefully.Music is not necessary in an PSA.Use it only if it adds powerful impact to the message.
Use very few, if any, sound effects.Every sound effect creates a picture in your audience’s mind.Don’t use sound effects just because they are fun to use.
Minimize the use of visual effects and transitions. The goal/message is primary. No visual effect should take your audience’s attention from the goal/message.
Remember, your PSA should: • Be 30 seconds long • Have one goal/message • Get the audience’s attention • Use standard language • Activate the audience’s emotions • Relate to the audience’s lives • Motivate the audience to act • Include the name of the organization and contact information
