Once the Weimar Government took charge of Germany, one of the first things it had to do was sign the peace treaty, the Treaty of Versailles.

How do you think that the Treaty affected the German government? The German army believed that by signing the Treaty of Versailles the government had ‘stabbed Germany in the back’. They argued that if they had carried on fighting the war that Germany would have been victorious and preserved Germany’s honour. Many people felt that the new government had betrayed Germany by signing the treaty.
