But first… Why make a fish? Fish play a role in Chinese New Year festivities. The word fish in Chinese 鱼 “yú” sounds like the word for abundance. That is why Chinese people often have fish every New Year’s Eve. 年年有 鱼 余 nián nián yǒu yú “To have fish every year” is “to have abundance every year”. Therefore it is lucky to have fish!
And why use red envelopes? Red has always been a lucky colour for the Chinese culture. Red envelopes are therefore often called “lucky envelopes”! (and also because they usually contain money! ) So by using “lucky” red envelopes, we are making lucky fish!
Step 1 Fold flap down
Step 2 Turn the red envelope sideways and… Fold the envelope in half
Step 3 Cut along the black lines… …but make sure you DO NOT cut where the BLUE lines are
Step 4 So it should look like this And if you open it up, it should look like this
Step 5 Now the hard part… Slip one tail between the two pieces of the other tail So it looks like this with the belly on both sides of the fish sticking out
Step 6 And finally… Staple the fish tales together so the fish won’t move X X And if you want to customize it… …give it a mouth …or poke holes in it to string it!
Now you know how to make a fish… Every time you get a “lucky” red envelope, and instead of just taking out the money and throwing them out help the environment and REUSE the red envelopes by teaching people around you how to make one!
