Priority Population (Age) • Drowning affects everyone! • Roughly 1 in 5 drowning victims are under the age of 14 • In 2010, drowning was the leading cause of injury death of children ages 1-4 • Second leading cause of injury death for child 5-9
Priority Population (Race) • Minorities, especially African Americans, are much more likely to drown that Caucasians • African American children are 3 times more likely than Caucasian children • 70% of African American and 62% of Hispanic children do not know how to swim
High Risk Locations • Pools and Spas account for the majority of drowning’s and near drowning’s for children ages 1-4 • Ages 4 and under • 53% drown in their home • 25% drown at friends home • 10% drown at public pools • 6% drown at neighbor’s pool
High Risk Locations (cont.) • Children can drown in as little as 1 in of water • A study of non-pool drowning’s had 684 reported cases • 553 in a bath tub • 1 in a sink • 65 in buckets or pails • 3 in toilets • 2 in washing machines
Environmental Modifications • Have your pool fenced in on all four sides • Prevent 50-90% of child drowning’s • Mandated by law in 10 states • Pools should be covered when not in use • Small inflatable pools should be put out of reach of children when not in use
Financial Burdens • $75,000-$180,000 in medical expenses for one single near drowning incident • One near drowning incident resulting in brain damage can also account for 4.5 million dollars in medical bills • Total cost of near drowning's each year for children 14 and younger is 6.8 billion dollars
