THE CIVITAS INITIATIVE IS CO-FINANCEDBY THE EUROPEAN UNION Promoting Sustainable Urban Mobility with CIVITAS
CIVITAS CIVITAS – cleaner and better transport in cities – stands for CIty-VITAlity-Sustainability. CIVITAS is an EU initiative for supporting and evaluating the implementation of integrated sustainable and energy efficient urban transport strategies in European cities that should make a real difference to the welfare of the European citizen. CIVITAS Initiative, a programme of “cities for cities,” was launched in 2000
CIVITASObjectives • Sustainable, clean and (energy) efficient urban transport measures • Integrated packages of technology and policy measures • Critical mass and markets for innovation
CIVITAS Expected impact • Increased energy efficiency in urban transport • Improved road safety in urban areas • Increased share of biofuels and other alternative fuels • Reduction of CO2, pollutant emissions and noise • Improved efficiency and effectiveness of urban transport and modal balance
CIVITAS spreads through EuropeCIVITAS I, II & Plus • CIVITAS I(2002 - 2006; FP5) • CIVITAS II(2005 – 2009; FP6) • CIVITAS Plus(2008 – 2012; FP7) • Future of CIVITAS: CIVITAS Plus II
CIVITAS Plus • CIVITAS Plus is the 3rd and current phase of CIVITAS • Runs from 2008 - 2012 • Groups 25 cities in 5 demonstration projects • EC contribution: EUR 80 million
CIVITAS Plus Themes addressed • Alternative fuels, energy efficient vehicles • Collective transport and integration modes • Demand management strategies • Mobility Management • Safety and security • Less car-dependent lifestyles • New concepts for goods distribution • Innovative telematics systems
Supporting projects, promoting the InitiativeCIVITAS VANGUARD VANGUARD is the Support Action for coordination and dissemination for CIVITAS Plus projects and the CIVITAS Initiative itself • Disseminate the results of the CIVITAS Initiative by targeting urban transport practitioners in an enlarged European Union • Coordinate common interest activities for CIVITAS Plus cities, and balance and extend their dissemination programmes • Offer an interface between the EC, the CIVITAS community and European society
VANGUARDTraining overview • 9 trainings within three clusters • Expectations Management • Technical Planning • Mobility Management • This event is the 3rd workshop organised in the Mobility Management strand.
Social exclusion • Urban mobility systems are often presented as harmonious, inclusive environments. The reality is different. • Passengers with reduced mobility: EU takes action: • Vehicles and infrastructure side • Operations (passenger rights – also for bus and coach!)
Workshop Goals The workshop should provide you with: • theoretical background on social inclusion; • the opportunity to exchange knowledge with experienced urban transport professionals; • inspiring case studies from across Europe that show; • innovative approaches in the field of social inclusion.
CIVITAS VANGUARDInstruments • European programme for dissemination and awareness-raising activities • Support & coordination activities for all cities and projects • Trainings, webinars, workshops, thematic e-mailgroups and study tours: 14-15 March, Brighton and Hove • Secretariat for CIVITAS Political Advisory Committee (PAC) • Annual CIVITAS Forum Conference • VITORIA GASTEIZ, 24-26 September • CIVITAS website and newsletters
