Tying a Bowline An Motor Learning experiment on instructions
DEMONSTRATION • Three Trials • Three attempts per trial • Participants did not already know how to tie the bowline • Participants were of similar age and background
VIDEO INSTRUCTION How to tie the bowline https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRwNwy_49Lw
Trial 1 • Participant viewed the video one time • The sound was muted • Participant was then given three tries to tie the knot • Observer was asked to rate the quality of each step on a scale of 1 - 5
Trial 2 • Participant viewed the video one time • The sound was on until the mnenomic • Participant was then given three tries to tie the knot • Observer was asked to rate the quality of each step
Trial 3 • Participant viewed the video one time • The sound was on the entire time • Participant was then given three tries to tie the knot • Observer was asked to rate the quality of each step on a scale of 1 - 5
Analysis The rating scale was based on the mnemonic which, if not known, the observer could not fairly rate the quality of the task. Effective instructions are best using both verbal and visual cues. Familiar language and mnemonics aid learning a new skill.
