Egypt • Egypt is located in the north east corner of Africa
Revolutionaries • Typically younger • Men and Women • Peaceful • Leader • Wael Ghonim – Wael is typically seen as the leader of the Egyptian Revolution for rallying together like minded Egyptians by organizing the January 25th protest through a Facebook event
Mumbarak Regime • Mumbarak became Egypt’s president in 1981, after El Sadat’s assassination • He remained in rule through a one party system with emergency laws • He set up authoritarian style rule • Pro-Mumbarak forces (and police) met the peaceful protesters with violence
Similarities • Both successfully removed the government • America declared itself independent from King George III and Britain • Egypt removed Mumbarak from power • Both utilized forms of technology to appeal to the masses and organize • America used paper • Egypt used the Internet • Both were meant to replace the old system of power with democracy • Both were popular among young adults • Both were met with force
Differences • Different causes for revolution • Different means of revolution • Egypt peacefully protested • America went to War
Reasons for the Egyptian Revolution • Police Brutality • State of Emergency Laws • For Free Speech • Government Corruption • High Unemployment • Inflation • Low Minimum Wage
Reasons for the American Revolution • No representation in government • French & Indian War • Proclamation Act 1763 • Sugar Act 1764 • Currency Act 1764 • Quartering Act 1765 • Stamp Act 1765
Direction of Egypt • Egypt is on their way to a fair democracy • Currently Egypt is being run by the military until elections are held • Elections are planned for March or April, 2012 • The new president will set up legislature that prevents corruption again
