  1. English Colonial Expansion Bell Ringer: What are two pieces of technology that aided in exploration? Describe them and why they made a difference.

  2. Explorers and Sea Dogs • John Cabot: venetian captain hired by King Henry the VII. Explored the coast of Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and New England. • Sea Dogs: Adventurous group of English sea Captains. Were traders and pirates. Included Sir Francis Drake and Sir William Raleigh. Challenged Spanish ships, and chartered routes from England to North and South America. Drake was the first to sail across the globe.

  3. British in India • 1600 Elizabeth charters the British East India Company (EIC). • EIC set up holds across India, garnering Britain a great profit. • EIC won over locals, to help with trade. • EIC eventually had to struggle with French traders who wanted to vie for trade competition with Britain.

  4. British in America • Britain was slow to head to North America. • Henry Hudson sailed for Dutch was among the first to find and use Northwest Passage. • Britain saw opportunity to colonize: • Jamestown, Roanoke, Plymouth • Colonists came for a variety of reasons: • Religion, better lives, not by choice.

  5. Mercantilism • Monarchy believed that colonies existed solely for economic growth. • Must export more than it imported. • Saw colonies as a source of raw materials. • Colonists could only sell to Britain, could not manufacture their own goods. • Britain avoided paying taxes, smuggled as a respectable job.
