  2. Why do we outline? • Helps your fluid writing process • Helps organize ideas • Overview of your paper • Shows possible relationships between your ideas • Makes sure you have all the information accounted for and in the right spot

  3. Types of Outlines • Formal vs. Informal • Using the correct introduction and outline skeleton • Using indentation and listings • Topic vs. Sentence • Creates sentence fragments of main words • Creates full sentences to organize

  4. How are you outlining? • You will be using a formal outline in a topic matter. • This means you will be using the correct notation but only be jotting down key words or phrases to refer back to your note cards.

  5. Main structure of Formal Outlining Note!! Start with Roman numerals, capital letters, numbers, lowercase numbers, bullets. In your paper, you should not go any further! You should really stop at numbers on your research paper outline. All signal beginnings end with a period. You must indent one more time with each lowering beginning.
