Introduction The Multifunction Control Display Unit (MCDU) forms is the primary interface between the pilot and the GPS Flight Management System.

1 Display Screen: 14 lines with 24 characters Amber: alert scratchpad messages Cyan: page titles and prompts Green: fixed data fields, field titles and waypoint names Magenta: identifies the TO waypoint on ACT LEG page and PROG page 1 Red: major change (confirmation of system reconfiguration White: computed (dynamic) data, data entry and advisory messages
Large Font: manual entries and waypoint information from navigation database Medium Font: computed or system generated data Small Font: data field units ATC VNAV
Annunciators POS Annunciator: illuminates when the aircraft’s navigation is in dead reckoning OFST Annunciator: illuminates during offset (parallel) track navigation FAIL MSG POS OFST IND ATC MSG Annunciator: illuminates when a caution or warning alert message appears in the scratchpad field of the MCDU display IND Annunciator: illuminates when the FMS is operating in independent mode FAIL Annunciator: illuminates at maximum with the display upon detection of a major MCDU failure ATC Annunciator: illuminates to indicate the reception of Air Traffic Control message (when implemented)

EXEC Key: used to accept modifications to the active route (flight plan) performed on the LEGS, RTE (route) or HOLD pages EXEC Annunciator: illuminates when a modification to the active route is in progress, but has not been executed BRT Key: controls the brightness of the screen and annuciators CLR Key: 1) clears one character to the left during scratchpad data entry. 2) when pressed and held for more than 1 second, it clears the entire scratchpad 3) clears advisory and alert messages in the scratchpad 4) with the scratchpad empty, pressing the CLR key will display a DELETE in the scratchpad that can be used with a LSK next to the data to be removed
MENU Key: provides access to the MCDU MENU page that allows access to other subsystems connected to the MCDU MENU Annunciator: illuminates when a subsystem request or malfunction exists Alpha-numeric keypad: provides the letters A-Z and numbers 0-9. E, N, S and W are circled denoting East, North, South and West PREV Key: when multiple pages are indicated in the page title line, pressing the PREV key backs up the display to the previous page or to the last page if presently on Page 1 NEXT Key: when multiple pages are indicated in the page title line, pressing the NEXT key advances the display to the next higher page number or to Page 1 if presently on the last page +/-: first press produces “-” and second press produces a “+” / Key: separates data fields in scratchpad entry SP: separates data fields in scratchpad entry . Key: provides a decimal point for numeric entries
Function Keys INIT REF: provides access to pages of data required for initialization and various categories of reference data RTE: provides access to the ROUTE page for the definition of routes entered into the FMS DEP/ARR: provides access to page for the definitions of departure and arrival procedures and runways FMC COMM VNAV ATC LEGS: displays the LEGS pages containing detailed data concerning each leg of the flight plan PROG: accesses the PROGRESS pages for display of current flight and navigation status information
Function Keys ATC: (not activated) provides access to the ATS communication function FMC COMM: (not activated) provides access to system AOC communication (ACARS) functions VNAV: (not activated) provides access to the vertical navigation functions FMC COMM VNAV ATC HOLD: accesses the HOLD pages for the definition of HOLDING procedures at a designated waypoint or present position FIX: accesses the FIX page for display bearing/distance information relative to a fix. Facilitates creation of fixes for use in flight planning
