Common Core Learning Standards for Math: Shifts & Priorities TST BOCES Inquiry Team Training August 22, 2011 Facilitated by Allison Sitts TST BOCES Mathematics Instructional Specialist
Session Learning Targets • Explore the six shifts that are associated with the transition to the Common Core Learning Standards for Mathematics • Consider how the shifts will effect mathematics instruction in districts • Review and understand the implications of the required fluencies expected by grade level • Exposure to the priorities that have been suggested
6 Shifts • Focus • Coherence • Fluency • Understanding • Application • Dual-Intensity
Focus • Focus on fewer topics, in greater depth • Higher performing countries… • …focus on fewer topics • …share 3 topics in common Whole Numbers Operations Quantities
Coherence • Each concept in each grade builds on what you learned before • Learn about related topics in a way that reinforces the core learning • A constant effort to rethink what we learn in math, so it links to core understanding
Fluency • Speed and accuracy • Memorizing facts • Kids do this at different rates, but it is important to insist on the ones that matter most for later, more complex math

Activity 1 • Turn to your neighbor and discuss the implications of the fluencies • How can fluency effect more advanced math skills? • Use the hand-out about fludencies to support your discussion
Deep Understanding • Flexible mastery of a small number of topics which can be applied to a variety of problems • The price of fewer is deeper Fact: Hong Kong only covers 50% of topics on the TIMSS assessments. We cover 100%.
Application • Capacity to apply learning in unique situations
Dual Intensity Powerful memories and automaticity Application to diverse, unexpected circumstances
Activity 2 • For each shift, identify: • What the shift will demand of teachers • Why the shift is critical to the success of the Common Core • Use the prompts to continue discussions
Priorities for Focus • Collaboratively written by the authors of the common core • Can be used to aid in curricular planning http://engageny.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Common-Core-MATH-taping-7.13.11-FINAL1.pdf
