Body Language • Make a group of 4 • As a group, for the following images of couples, analyze what message you believe is being communicated and WHY?? • Write this information down • Do not yell out the answer to the whole class (yet).
Image analysis • Now we will go back to the first picture and discuss what your group believes was being communicated by each couple. • How can we come to the conclusions that we do simply based on a photograph?
Fake Smiles • As a class we will complete an online activity trying to better understand genuine and fake facial expressions • Brainstorm with your groups for each video clip whether or not you think the smile is real of fake. Mehrabian’s Rule • Brainstorm- How much do each of the elements account for the meaning of a message? • Results • Words 7% • Tone of Voice 38% • Body Language 55% • Therefore, effective communication can result in the congruency of these three elements • “Incongruence” can look like: • Verbal: "I do not have a problem with you!" • Non-Verbal: person avoids eye-contact, looks anxious, has a closed body language, etc.
