Schematic of detector for Run-11 • Equipment in place: • HCal is two existing 9x12 modules from E864 (NIM406,227) • ECal are two small lead-glass modules from BigCal at JLab • BBC (from PHOBOS) and ZDC • Preshower is newly constructed scintillator arrays • Goals: • Establish impact of 3IR operation on PHENIX/STAR luminosity • Calibrate HCal • relative gain via cosmic-ray m • absolute energy scale via r,L,KS… • Measure hadronic backgrounds to benchmark simulations • Measure jet analyzing power (Lint~10 / pb, P=50%)

Commissioning • First data recorded on Weds. 26 January after fixing MVME 2306 and FPGA board (DSM) • Timed-in beam-beam counter, ECal and HCal phototube signals to ADC • Commissioned minimum-bias trigger • Further commissioning on Thurs. 27 January • HV scan of BBC for gain adjustments • Align data pipeline timing for ZDC • Timed-in ZDC, ZDC shower-maximum detector and preshower signals to ADC • Further commissioning on Sun. 30 January • Identify reversed logic issue for time-to-amplitude converters (partially fixed on 31 Jan 15-minute access) • Commission elog, database recording So far, no impact of collisions at IP2 on IP6,8
Event Reconstruction • Reconstruct 200K minimum-bias events as seen in beam-left ECal via • Clustering • Shower-shape analysis • 50 MeV/count for all detectors • Fixed vertex position used (TAC issue) • Epair>12 GeV, |E1-E2|/Epair < 0.8 Neutral pion reconstruction from ECal will be part of HCal calibration Reconstructions concurrent with data acquisition provide critical feedback to experiment
Issuesshould be resolved during 20110202 access • Recover event hit-timing information from BBC detectors • Single-channel issues • Increase monitoring feedback to MCR • … and a long list of small tasks • After access, • adjust gains for ECal and selected HCal (mostly good from cosmic-rays) • start commissioning triggers on HCal, ECal and ZDC We are ~1 week from physics-quality data
