The ability of your agency to operate following a disaster depends on you! • Up to 40% of businesses fail following a catastrophic natural or manmade disaster • 90% of Americans are not fully prepared for a catostrophic emergency. • Over 90% of small business owners feel that a disaster would seriously disrupt their business within the next 2 years. • Preparing for an emergency is an essential component of an organization’s business and operations continuity planning.

  3. 3 Steps to Being Prepared

  4. Be Informed Stay educated about the disasters that are most likely to occur in your area!

  5. Be Informed about Disasters in your Area -70% chance, in the next 30 years for a major earthquake -A catastrophic earthquake in the greater Bay Area could displace over 100,000 people into shelters and cause 70 billion dollars worth of damage in Santa Clara County Alone. -The communication/transportation infrastructure would be compromised -The capacity of local relief agencies would be overwhelmed -Evacuation from impacted areas is expected

  7. Earthquake Safety Inside: *Drop, Cover & Hold* -Under a sturdy table or object What about “Triangle of Life?” -Interior wall corners or wall -Doorway? Depends… *Most earthquake related injuries are from flying glass & falling objects, not collapses.

  8. Outside: -Drop & Cover! -Open space is best -Away from buildings, trees, telephone lines, etc… **If driving, pull over in an OPEN space & stay in the car -What if I’m driving on a bridge?

Preparing your home: -Keep a flashlight w/batteries and a pair of tennis shoes at the bed side. -Bolt down water heaters & large furniture to wall studs. -Secure other large/mobile items (TVs, light fixtures, computer equipment). -Install latches on cabinets. -Securely anchor your home to the foundation.

  10. Make a Plan • Talk- assign roles • Plan- 2 meeting locations • Learn- turn off utilities • Remember- emergency info • Practice- evacuation

  11. Get a Kit • A disaster supplies kit should include: • Water • Food and a manual can opener • Flashlights and batteries • First aid kit • Battery-powered radio • Tools • Duct tape and plastic sheeting
