GT Physics Project 5th six weeks
Rube Goldberg Machine • An unnecessarily complicated machine built to do a very simple task
What the machine must do (choose ONE end task) • Ring a bell • Drop a marble into a cup • Lift something • Choose your own (YOU can share with the teacher BEFORE you begin to plan)
What your machine must include • Four of the six simple machines • Inclined plane • Lever • Pulley • Wheel and axle • Wedge • Screw
Steps to follow • Think of a design • Draw the plan • Write an explanation of the plan • You can share your plan with your teacher
After your plan is approved • Build and test your machine • This will take a lot of time to get it right. EXPECT to have to make adjustments to your prototypes until you work out all the problems. DO NOT GIVE UP!
Grading • Drawn plan (25 pts.) • neat • approximately to scale • labeled • Written explanation (25 pts.) • complete sentences with correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation • in order of events from beginning to end • Simple machine vocabulary included and used correctly • Verbal explanation (25 pts.) • clearly explained • spoken clearly and loud enough to be heard from the back of the room • appropriate tone and gestures • eye contact with audience, NOT READING • Successful demonstration (25 pts.) • the machine performs as it should
Also… • You may work alone or in groups • No more than three people in a group. • Everyone in the group will receive the exact same grade.
Due dates • The plan should be completed by Thursday, February 28, 2013 • The machine is due by Thursday, March 21, 2013
