Startup Test PlanPRD 1.1-002 • Spells out our plan for turning on the LCLS systems. Currently working on rev-1. • Evolved from "Commissioning Document" discussed at previous workshop. • The editors continue to welcome your contributions! J. Welch, LCLS Commissioning Worskhop, SLAC
Startup Phases • Phase I - low beam quality • BBA, radiation reduction, x-ray diagnostics, SR measurements • Phase II - high beam quality • low emittance tuning, gain curve measurement, precision x-ray measurements • Phase III - transition to operation • Full rep rate, stable operating conditions, full energy range, finalize operational procedures J. Welch, LCLS Commissioning Worskhop, SLAC
End of Startup • Startup Plan goes well beyond "Start of Operations" which is met when X Rays are detected at the Far Hall • At the end of Phase III we leave the machine with operators who are then able to provide users with required beams on a daily basis. J. Welch, LCLS Commissioning Worskhop, SLAC
Phase I Performance Goals J. Welch, LCLS Commissioning Worskhop, SLAC
Phase I Demonstrates • Bunch compression and bunch length control • Orbit control and stability • Xray diagnostics functionality • SR measurement capability • Beam collimation and radiation protection J. Welch, LCLS Commissioning Worskhop, SLAC
Phase II Performance Goals J. Welch, LCLS Commissioning Worskhop, SLAC
Phase II Demonstrates • SASE FEL process is working • Requires • FEL quality orbit straightness and stability • Good linewidth • Good emittance • High bunch current • Gain length measurements • Areas of physics concern: CSR, instabilities, wakefield effects, new physics effects,… J. Welch, LCLS Commissioning Worskhop, SLAC
Phase III Performance Goals J. Welch, LCLS Commissioning Worskhop, SLAC
Completion of Phase III Demonstrates • We are ready to turn the machine over to the operators and the users • We need another project! J. Welch, LCLS Commissioning Worskhop, SLAC
