  13. Rotary’s Beginnings First Rotary Club in Chicago, 1905. First Rotarians 1. Paul Harris – organized the group because of a desire for friends 2.   14. Rotary’s Wheel Emblem Rotary Year 2013-2014 Engage Rotary Change Lives Drawn as a simple wagon wheel by Chicago Rotarian Montague Bear, an engineer.   15. Object of Rotary To encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise. This ideal of service is fostered through: 1. the development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; 2. high ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupation and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society; 3. the application of the ideal of service in one’s personal, business and community life; and 4. the advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.   17. The Four-Way Test Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor, 1923 took over a failing Aluminum Company. Created a 24 word code of ethics. Taylor became RI President 1954-55. Adopted by RI in 1943. Translated into more than 100 languages. Of the things we think, say or do: Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?   18. Types of Membership Active Member: Elected to membership under a business or professional classification. Enjoys all the obligations, responsibilities and privileges of membership provided in RI Constitution and Bylaws.   19. Types of Membership Honorary Rotary membership: offered to those who have distinguished themselves by meritorious service in the furtherance of Rotary ideals.   20. Introduction of • Rotary International • Rotary's leadership team includes the RI Board of Directors, The Rotary Foundation Board of Trustees, and the executive staff of the Secretariat. Rotary Year 2013-2014 Engage Rotary Change Lives

  21. Introduction of • Rotary International • RI Board of Directors – administrative body of RI. It composes of 19 members. • Its members include the RI President, president-elect, vice president, treasurer, and the general secretary. Introduction of • Rotary International • Rotary Zones • Rotary International's Board of Directors is elected by Rotary's 34 zones (with over 550 clubs). RI Bylaws require the composition of the zones to be reviewed at least every eight years to ensure that each zone has approximately the same number of Rotarians.   24. Introduction of • The Rotary Foundation In 1917, RI President Arch C. Klumph proposed that an endowment be set up “for the purpose of doing good in the world.” In 1928, when the endowment fund had grown to more than US$5,000, it was renamed The Rotary Foundation, and it became a distinct entity within Rotary International.   26. Introduction of • The Rotary Foundation • The Rotary Foundation Board of Trustees, and the executive staff of the Secretariat. The Rotary Foundation Board of Trustees is responsible for managing the business of the Foundation. There shall be 15 trustees, each nominated by the president-elect and elected by the RI Board. • Its members include the chair, chair-elect, vice chair, and the Rotary general secretary. Trustees are appointed to 4-year term by the RI President, with approval from the RI Board of Directors. Rotary Year 2013-2014 Engage Rotary Change Lives

History of District 3450 • The first club in our district Rotary Club of Hong Kong was chartered in 1931. • Rotary International decided to constitute the clubs in Hongkong – Macau - Taiwan area under District 345, effective as from 1st July 1960 when we had altogether 17 clubs with 764 Rotarians.  Rotary Year 2013-2014 Engage Rotary Change Lives

  28. History of District 3450 • Due to the rapid growth, the number of Rotary clubs mushroomed to 101 in District 345 (Hong Kong-Macau-Northern Taiwan) during the Rotary Year 1986/87.  Rotary Year 2013-2014 Engage Rotary Change Lives

History of District 3450 It was just impossible for a district governor to oversee all these clubs, hence a new district was born, known as District 348 (Northern Taiwan) whereas District 345 remained unchanged, except the area covers only Hong Kong-Macau with a total of 27 clubs as from 1st July 1987. History of District 3450 In January 1995, the first club in Mongolia, Rotary Club of Ulaanbaatar was chartered.  Since then, the membership has grown steadily. From 1st July 2007, Rotary International approved to include Mongolia to be part of District 3450. From August 2013, RI approved to include Guangzhoug Province to District 3450. Rotary Year 2013-2014 Engage Rotary Change Lives
