  4. Republic of Nauru Flag Nauru gained independence in 1968. The 12 pointed white star represents the 12 tribes of Nauru. The Yellow strip represents the equator and the star again represents the location of the island South of the equator. The surrounding color blue is the Pacific Ocean.
