  2. Kingston Station • Station renovated in 1996 • Located about 1.5 miles from the center of URI Campus • Potential for a shuttle service to University • Surrounded by undeveloped land • Very limited commercial development • No water or sewer

  3. Kingston Characteristics • Population ~5500 • 13.4% growth in South Kingstown 1990-2000 • Very young population • Sprawling • Traffic congestion • Threats to aquifer – no infrastructure Source: 2000 U.S. Census

  4. Westerly Station • Station renovated in 1998 • Riverwalk Revitalization • Near pedestrian-friendly downtown • Surrounded by development potential • Direct commercial investment since station renovation • Water and Sewer

  5. Westerly Characteristics • Population ~23,000 • 6.4% growth 1990-2000 • Sprawling – 1.1% change in persons per square mile 1990-2000 Source: 2000 U.S. Census

  6. Kingston: transit leads development • Westerly: development leads transit Westerly as a priority • Investment proceeding near station, even without commuter rail • Opportunity to harness market for TOD
