WP3: The Neutrino Factory Project Breakdown Structure and Costing Ajit Kurup CERN Costing Workshop 25th May 2011
Introduction • Breakdown accelerator facility into level 3 components and group services together within these level 3 components. • Identify CFPs. • Mainly following component breakdown. • Need to cost with limited engineering support. • Need to carefully specify interfaces. • Go over current breakdown of level 3 components. • List services. • Questions I have.
Level 3 Breakdown • Sort of obvious but details are not so straight forward. • Designs have not been finalised so need to specify interface at a point that is well defined but allows scope for designs to change. • Need to specify beam parameters at each interface and allow space for matching to the periodic structure of the transfer line. • Include this in the requirements of the extraction lines. • Specific details of transfer line can be done last once the design has been fixed. • Transfer lines from RLAto FFAG and FFAG to storage ring need special consideration. Need to provide clear route out (especially for the RLA).
Proposed Interfaces • Interface documents need to be written. • My current proposal. • Some discussion about upstream and downstream interface to target has already started. • Needs to be discussed and a consensus must be reached. Target, Capture and decay Muon Front-end Storage ring Proton Driver Linac RLAs FFAG
Generic Services • Magnet power systems • Excluding special kicker supplies • RF system • Cryogenic system • Vacuum system • Diagnostics • Controls • Civil • Buildings/tunnels • Electrics • HVAC • Health and safety • Water
Proton Driver • RAL • Ion source • LEBT • RFQ • MEBT • Low energy acceleration • High energy acceleration • Transfer line • RCS • Transfer line to the target and final focus. • Project X + rings • Need to start discussion with Keith Gollwitzer • SPL + rings • Need to start discussion with Simone Gillardoni.
Target, Capture and Decay • Focus on liquid target but will allow for solid and powder options. • Target Module • Primary containment • Resistive Magnet • Inner shielding • Helium Cooling • Target Trolley • Mercury flow • Hot cells • Capture Solenoid • Decay section?
Muon Front-End • Based on Study 2a design. • Buncher • Phase-rotation • Cooling • Will be able to use experience from MICE. • Component breakdown • Rotator Modules • Absorber modules • Special services • Radiation and remote handling • Safteyissues with LiH? • RF and multiple frequencies.
Linac • Three sections three types of cryomodules • To match change in beta • Simple Magnet and cavity simulations have been done. • Understand feasibility and geometry. • Engineering sketches done.
RLA • Injection chicane. • RLA1. • Linac cell. • Droplet arcs. • Cryomodules similar to lower linaccryomodules. • Transfer line from RLA1 and injection chicane into RLA2. • RLA2. • Linaccell. • Droplet arcs. • Extraction line towards FFAG.
FFAG • Injection line. • Cell design. • Extraction line. • Started simple engineering sketch of cell. • Simple magnet simulation (cell and septum).
Storage Ring • Injection line. • Cell design. • Special diagnostics • Energy, Polarisation and divergence. • Special engineering considerations for steeply inclined tunnel.
Accelerator Design Tool • To facilitate exchange of information between accelerator physicists and engineers and to include engineering considerations at an early stage of the design process. • Also contains input information for the costing tool. • Can be used to generate MADX input file and G4bl file. • Versioning of baselines • Will need to iterate between accelerator physics design and engineering design.
Questions/Points for Discussion • EDMS • What to put in here. • Clarification of project phases. • What details to include, etc. • Clarification of what exactly is included in manpower and fixed costs, etc. • Risk register. • Component multiplicity. • Methodology document and rules for additional tables. • EUROnufinishes before IDS-NF.
