  3. Preparing Your Students for School • 1 ½ inch binder with 8 tabs/dividers • Colored pencils, scissors, glue sticks • Folders (Homework, unfinished work) • Composition notebook • Silent Reading book • Reusable Water Bottle

  5. Reading • Build Fluency, Comprehension, and Critical Thinking skills • Themed-Based Literature (Whole Group) • Literature Circles (Leveled groups in order to meet the needs of all students) • Responding to a variety of reading material (fiction, non-fiction, mysteries, tales, fables

  6. Author Study • Author Study: Kate DiCamillo • Because of Winn Dixie (in class) • Student’s will complete a book report on another book she has written. • The Tale of Despereaux • The Tiger Rising • The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane • The Magician’s Elephant

  7. Writing • Genres • Opinion Piece • Narrative • Informational Writing • Podcasting: writing scripts and book reviews • Strategy: 6+1 Traits of Writing • Writing as a process: planning, drafting, revising, editing

  8. Spelling • Spelling is done weekly • Pre-test given on Monday • Student’s create lists based on the pattern of the week. (Home News) • Test given on Friday, words missed are added to their list for the following week.

MathEveryday Math • Number sense • place value; factors; multi-digit addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; rounding; fractions; decimals, negative numbers • Algebra and Functions • Measurement and Geometry • Statistics, Data Analysis, and Probability • At the beginning of each unit, a parent letter goes home that has answers to the homework

  14. Homework • Homework will be assigned daily. • Students should expect about 45 minutes of homework daily (including reading for 20-30 minutes) Monday-Thursday. Unless otherwise noted, it will be due the next day. • Home work notices are sent to kids who miss an assignment. Notices need to be signed and returned the next day with the completed assignment. Students who miss 5 or more homework assignments per trimester will be given a detention.

  18. Conferences • Conferences will be held the week of October 7-11. Every day of that week is a minimum day. • Please sign up for a day and time tonight. I will send home conference reminders soon. • If you are unable to come at any of the times given, please let me know and we can arrange something.
