Context • Prior to NCLB, the MEA was to be used as a check against local assessment • MEA is approximately 18 hours out of a student’s 13,650 hours of a K-12 education • MEA counts for between 10% of a student’s assessment

Adequate Yearly Progress • AYP is a requirement of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act • Student achievement must be measured by a standardized test • AYP is determined using approximately 57 different criteria • All students must meet standards by 2014 • In Maine, the MEA is the only measurement used for AYP
Measuring AYP – Student #00000 • Is a student of color • Has identified special needs • Has free or reduced lunch • Is an English Language Learner • If student 00000 did not meet the standard she/he would be counted as four different students
Portland’s Data • Refer to AYP Table • All Portland schools made AYP in Mathematics • All but one school made AYP in Reading • Four schools did not make AYP as whole schools • Two schools, Reiche and King, did not make AYP last year, but did make AYP this year
