Sponges Phylum: Porifera (Pores) The simplest animal Invertebrates No symmetry Live in water all over the world Depend on water for food, oxygen, and reproduction
Body Structures Pore- small openings that let water and food inside Collar cell- cells with whips that move water into the sponge and trap food Spike- supports and protects the sponge Jelly-like cell- digests food, removes waste, and forms sperm & egg cells Larva- Immature form of animal that looks very different from adult
Reproduction They can reproduce asexually & sexually! Asexual reproduction- organism produces a new organism identical to itself. Ex) Sponges can reproduce throughbuddingwhere a small new sponge grows on the side of adult and then breaks off & grows Sexual reproduction- organism produces a new organism when sperm and egg combine
Sexual Reproduction #1 Adult sponge releases sperm #5 Larva settles on a hard surface & develops into adult #2 Sperm enters another sponge and fertilizes an egg #4 Water currents carry it away #3 A larva develops
