WHO • The Oregon Territory was originally controlled by Spain and Russia. • After they gave up, the US and British started fighting for the territory. • Later, the Oregon Territory becomes a part of the US.
WHERE • The Oregon Territory consisted of present-day states of Idaho, Washington, Oregon, and partially Montana and Wyoming.
WHY • The United States wanted the territory for their territorial expansion. • It was a part of their Manifest Destiny.
1846 • The United States and Britain takes over the Oregon Territory after Spain and Russia gives up the land. • The Treaty of Oregon: • The Americans and British agree to divide up the territory at the forty-ninth parallel.
1847 • The Whitman Massacre: • The Whitmans and twelve others are murdered by the Cayuse Indians at the Waiilatpu Mission. • 5 Indians sentenced to death. • Cayuse War
1848 • The Treaty of Washington: • The Oregon Territory finally becomes a part of the United States. • Gold is discovered at California
1850 • A significant increase in settlers to the Oregon Territory. • The Donation Land Law attracts settlers. • Increased population created more disputes between the Natives and the white settlers. • Slavery Increased.

Conclusion • Despite the disadvantages the Native Americans received because of the Donation Land Law, the United States overall benefitted from gaining this territory because they gained more territory, developed technology, economy, increased population, and many more.
