Routines Daily Folder Communication Keep in touch about your child’s day and any changes such as dismissal or lunch. Please sign the folder daily. Reading log – set your Aug./Sept. goal (minimum of 30) The single most important thing you can do with your child this year is to read to them. ALL Heritage Trails parents are expected to keep a reading log with their child. The Kdg. minimum is 20 books per month. Please consider making your family goal at least one book per day…..maybe even two. You will see the rewards in your child’s progress. Work done in class Talk with your child about their day and their work.
Routines - Homework Reading/writing folder – sent on Wednesday General instruction page Assignment page that includes a note section for parent and/or teacher comments Four page booklet to be read multiple times by your child. They will need to learn the sight words included in these booklets. Worksheet pages to be completed together and returned. Journal page Your child should read the words and fill in the blanks. For the first nine weeks, you may help with the spelling. Your child will eventually be expected to record the sounds in the word that they wish to write Your child should draw a detailed picture of their completed sentence. Drawing is your child’s first attempt at story writing. Details in a picture will eventually lead to details in their writing. If your child writes about playing with their dog, their picture should include themselves, their dog, where they are playing and what they are playing. Please encourage these kinds of details.
Routines - Homework Home School Links – sent on Monday Booklet for you to read to your child following the enclosed instructions. Your child will be ‘reading’ the booklet to you also. Journal pages – Please encourage details in the drawings. It is OK for you to do SOME of the writing in this journal. Please encourage them to do their best. There is a comment section on the front for teacher and/or parent comments. Parent Instruction Page Goal for the packet is at the top. Please follow the step-by-step instructions on at least three different occasions If your child can read the words the first time without assistance, this is marvelous. Please be sure to discuss the goal and make sure they understand the print concept being discussed. “My child memorized the words, they can’t really read them……” This is OK too. Believing that you can read is the first step in learning to read. I want your child to believe that they can read so encourage, encourage, encourage. Developing memory skills is another important Kdg. goal and is developed through this mental practice.
Routines - Homework Nursery Rhymes The nursery rhyme of the week will come home on Monday. Please practice with your child. They will receive a poetry folder card if they can say the poem without help by Friday. ME Bag You will receive this bag sometime in the next month. You will need a family picture. Instructions are included with the bag. Please return the completed bag the following school day. Due dates Home work is typically due two days after it is sent home. But, I know that lives can get busy. It is more important to me that you do your child’s homework carefully and together than when it is returned. Please take the time that you need. Homework should be returned in time to prepare the folder for the next week’s work.
