  5. Decline of the Republic 140-60 BCE • Life change in Rome after the Gracchi brothers are killed • Rome plunged into a series of civil war • Rome’s army became more loyal to military commanders than to the Senate

Julius Caesar’s Rise to Power • Out of chaos emerged Julius Caesar • In 60 BCE, Caesar entered a political alliance with Crassus and Pompey • Known as the First Triumvirate • In 59 BCE, Caesar embarks on a nine year conquest of Gaul (Modern France) • Caesar conquers: • Gaul • Extends Rome’s territory to the North Sea • Conducted first invasion of Britain
